Tracking Wireless Piggybacking! READ THIS! HELP!!?
I’m writing a paper for class on this, and the controversy over it whether some people consider it illegal or not, but I have all the information I need about that for the most part on that. I’m now at the part of my paper as far as tracking it….SO for my question!!
I understand that if you take your laptop down the street or to a starbucks that the owner CAN in fact see who is connected to there network, that’s easy. BUT what about hackers who do this for criminal purposes then leave? For instance:
Someone takes there laptop around the city, in a neighborhood somewhere miles from there house and finds a signal, while in there car they stop there, they go to a website and order a bunch of merchandise online, under that persons network WITH a stolen credit card, which then has it delivered to a drop spot to be left at a door (I’ve seen dateline lol)
Now I’ve heard of people saying well they will track your IP address…but actually when you piggyback your using THAT persons ip address. And THAT person is responsible for the activity going on it there network, thats why its important to set a pass code on the router to avoid piggybackers from obtaining illegal downloads such as child pornography.
And even if the owner of the network logs the mac addresses connected to there network what will they do with that? still cant track it…
So if a hacker finds a hotspot, using a stolen credit card, then a week goes by and the owner of the card finds out it was stolen and reports it to authority’s who "MAY" investigate it and find out WHERE it was ordered, how do they track the hacker then, a week later, when the police are at owner of the person network that was involved in the credit card fraud? Looking for some good information on this as this is all i need to complete my paper…cause and effect sort of thing. Thanks!
